Manufacturing process, lead times & site surveys

How a Howcroft Signs project runs from artwork to installation, how long it takes, and exactly what we need from you before a free site survey. Anything not answered here, call us on 01709 878282.

Our manufacturing process

How a bespoke sign goes from first enquiry to installed signage

It runs in five stages: design and quotation, artwork approval, site survey where one is needed, manufacture at our Rotherham workshop, then delivery or installation. You keep a single point of contact throughout, and nothing is cut until you have approved the artwork.

Everything. Our Rotherham facility covers CNC routing, laser cutting, metal fabrication, welding, spray finishing and large-format print and vinyl application. Illuminated letters, tray signs, built-up letters, shadow boards, safety and noticeboard signage, wayfinding systems, monument signs and wall graphics are all made by our own team rather than bought in.

Yes. We accept CAD files, PDFs, sketches and photographs, and we work to your existing brand guidelines where you have them. Our design team then produces technical drawings for your approval before anything is manufactured.

Always. We issue proofs or technical drawings for sign-off covering sizes, materials, colours and fixing positions, and manufacture only begins once you have approved them.

Every item is checked for dimensions, finish and colour match before it leaves us, and illuminated products are powered up and tested. Safety and regulatory signage is produced to BS EN ISO 7010 standards.

Lead times & turnaround

What to expect for standard production, rush work and larger builds

Standard production is 2 to 10 working days from artwork approval, depending on the type of sign. Flat-cut letters typically take 2 to 5 working days, illuminated channel letters and tray signs 3 to 7, and larger monument or built-up projects 7 to 14. Stock safety signs can be despatched the same day.

Often, yes. We build express production into the schedule wherever capacity allows, so tell us your deadline as early as possible. Rush work can carry a premium, and we will confirm what is achievable before you commit.

Design complexity, material choice, specialist finishes, illumination, quantity and how quickly artwork is approved all affect the timeline. On the installation side, site access, out-of-hours working and whether planning or advertising consent is needed can add time, so we flag those early.

Barely. Surveys within our 30-mile radius are usually arranged within a few days of your enquiry and run alongside design work, so they rarely add to production time. We also survey nationally for multi-site projects.

Yes. If your building or unit is not ready, we can hold completed signage at our Rotherham site and book the delivery or installation for a date that suits you.

Site survey requirements

What is covered, what we need from you, and when permission is required

Yes. Site surveys are free and carry no obligation within our 30-mile radius of Rotherham, which covers South Yorkshire and the surrounding towns. Beyond that radius we still survey nationwide for multi-site and larger projects, and any travel cost is confirmed in advance.

The site address and postcode, a named contact who can give access, any access or parking restrictions, and the mounting surface involved, whether that is a wall, the ground, a roof or a pole. Photographs of the elevation, site plans or drawings you already have, and a note of the available power supply for illuminated signs all help us prepare.

Our surveyor measures the fixing area, checks the mounting surface and substrate, confirms access and safe working at height, photographs the elevation and agrees the fixing method with you. For illuminated signage we also check the power supply and the cable route.

It is helpful but not essential. If a colleague, facilities contact or site manager can give access and answer questions, we can complete the survey without you and send you the findings either way.

Illuminated signs, listed buildings and conservation areas often need advertisement consent, and some sites need planning permission. We flag anything we believe applies during the survey and can advise on the application, but consent stays with you as the site owner.

Yes. For multi-site rollouts we plan surveys to cover several locations per trip and can work around your trading hours so your operation is never disrupted.
