Visual management for 5S & 6S

5S and 6S workplace implementation, made visible

We design and manufacture the visual layer a 5S or 6S programme depends on — shadow boards, PPE boards, audit boards, SOP displays and zone signage. Made at our Rotherham factory, installed nationwide.

What 5S and 6S mean in practice

5S is a workplace organisation method: Sort what belongs in the area, Set in Order what stays, Shine the area and inspect it, Standardise the agreed layout, then Sustain it through audits and ownership. 6S adds Safety, which is why manufacturing, logistics and food production sites tend to run 6S rather than 5S.

The programme usually lives or dies on visibility. If the standard is only in a folder, the area drifts back within a few weeks; if it is on the wall, anyone can audit it in seconds. That is the part we manufacture — shadow boards with printed tool silhouettes, custom shadow boards, numbered PPE boards, 5S audit and score boards, SOP displays and zone signage, all built to one visual system.

The 5S and 6S methodology, standard by standard

Each S changes what people do on the floor — and each one needs a physical cue to survive a busy shift. Here is what the standard asks for and the signage we make to support it.

1S

Sort

Seiri

Remove everything that is not needed for the job in hand — surplus tools, stock, paperwork and equipment with no current use in the area.

On the floor

Red-tag areas and quarantine zones, so removed items have somewhere to go and a date to be cleared.

Our signage

Red-tag and quarantine zone signs, holding-area boards and clearly marked “awaiting decision” bays.

2S

Set in Order

Seiton

Give everything that stays a fixed, marked home — the position that makes it quickest to find, use and put back.

On the floor

Shadow boards, silhouetted tool positions, labelled shelves, numbered PPE hooks and marked floor zones.

Our signage

Custom shadow boards with printed silhouettes, numbered PPE boards, shelving labels and zone-identification signage.

3S

Shine

Seiso

Clean the area and inspect it while you clean — leaks, damage and missing parts show up when a surface is meant to be clean.

On the floor

Cleaning stations with every implement shadowed, cleaning schedules on the wall and equipment colour-coded by zone.

Our signage

Cleaning-station shadow boards, colour-coded equipment boards per hygiene zone and wipe-clean schedule boards.

4S

Standardise

Seiketsu

Turn the first three into the agreed standard — the same colours, labels, layouts and checks in every bay, on every shift.

On the floor

Standard-work and SOP displays at the point of use, identical layouts between bays and between sites.

Our signage

Standard-work and SOP display boards, notice boards, QR-linked instructions and one repeatable board template per site.

5S

Sustain

Shitsuke

Keep it going with audits, ownership and visible scoring, so the standard survives a busy week and a shift change.

On the floor

5S audit boards, shift scoreboards, condition-monitoring panels and named area owners.

Our signage

5S audit and score boards, condition-monitoring panels, area-owner signage and refreshable magnetic or printed boards.

6S

Safety

Anzen

The sixth S: make hazards, PPE and emergency routes as visible as the tools. This is the addition that turns a 5S programme into 6S.

On the floor

PPE boards with numbered hooks, hazard and prohibition signage, marked walkways and clearly identified emergency points.

Our signage

PPE notice boards with numbered hooks, WHS safety-zone graphics, hazard marking, fire-point and emergency signage.

Implementing 5S or 6S on a live site

Visual standards fail when they are bought as products rather than installed as a system. This is the sequence we work through with operations and facilities teams.

1

Baseline audit

Walk each area, photograph it and score it against the five Ss, so improvement can actually be measured later.

2

Zone and colour plan

Agree zones, colours, routes and ownership — the rules every board and sign will follow.

3

Shadow and mark

Photograph the tools and equipment, then design boards with printed silhouettes and labelled positions.

4

Standardise the visual layer

Add SOP, notice and audit boards, so the standard is documented where the work happens, not in a folder.

5

Install and brief

Install on site, then brief the team at the board — a board nobody is trained on becomes a shelf.

6

Audit and sustain

Audit boards, shift scores and scheduled reviews keep the standard alive as tools, teams and layouts change.

5S & 6S project gallery

5S and 6S projects we’ve manufactured

Shadow boards, PPE notice boards and zone signage built for workplaces running 5S or 6S — the board does the auditing, so a missing tool or empty hook is obvious before an inspector finds it.

5S workplace organisation

Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise, Sustain — every tool has a marked home, so a gap is visible at a glance.

6S — 5S plus Safety

Adds Safety: the same visual discipline applied to PPE, harnesses, safety notices and zone control.

6S

Amazon LBA2 WHS Safety Zone

Amazon LBA2 · Doncaster, UK

A full workplace health and safety entrance zone combining Safe to Go programme graphics, Dragonfly safety branding and PPE guidance displays on the route everyone walks.

  • WHS programme graphics
  • PPE guidance displays
  • Entrance zone installation
5S6S

Amazon Warehouse Loading Bay Graphics System

Amazon Fulfillment Center · Amazon Fulfillment Center, UK

Loading bay door wraps and bay graphics that mark each position and carry performance reminders, so the bay layout reads at a glance instead of being explained.

  • Bay door wraps
  • Performance reminders
  • Safety compliance messaging

5S and 6S questions

5S is a workplace organisation method built on five steps: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise and Sustain. Each step removes waste from a work area and makes the agreed standard visible, so anyone can see whether the area is in control.
